HDH welcomes new provider, launches orthopedic program

Harney District Hospital (HDH) is pleased to announce the arrival of a new medical provider, Brad Mangum. Mangum is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) specializing in orthopedics (the diagnosis, treatment, and therapy of conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and nerves). Mangum was brought on to establish an orthopedics program at HDH, in partnership with physicians from The Center in Bend, Ore.

Mangum brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position, and his presence will allow orthopedic surgeries to be done right here in Harney County at HDH. Coordinating with surgeons at The Center, Mangum will do pre-operative and post-operative care for patients, in addition to assisting on surgeries they will be performing.

Mangum’s previous post was at a rural medical center in Gooding, Idaho, where he established and successfully ran an orthopedic program similar to what is being launched at HDH. He is passionate about the opportunity to provide services here that will alleviate the need for people to travel hours away for care.

“We’ve got three quality surgeons from The Center with decades of experience. On top of that, we’ve got a great team at HDH. All the ingredients are here,” Mangum said.

Mangum comes to Harney County from Idaho, but has lived in Alaska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Utah, and spent his childhood on a cattle ranch in New Mexico.

“I pretty much grew up on a horse,” he said with a laugh.

Mangum started out his career in the corporate world working in communications. He decided he wanted a change and went back to school to obtain a doctorate in chiropractic. In the process of completing that degree, he decided that orthopedics was his area of interest and went on to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing to become an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Since then, Mangum has assisted in thousands of orthopedic surgical cases, working with spine, hand, sports and general orthopedic surgeons.

“When I first read the job description for this position at HDH, I thought, ‘man, they just wrote this just for me.’ I was pretty excited about coming here.”

Mangum loves golfing, horseback riding, fishing, camping and outdoor life in general, as well as the occasional John Wayne movie.

“I’m really excited about being here.”
