CAN Cancer Demolition Derby fundraiser brings in $4,200

A fundraiser for CAN Cancer of Harney County (in memory of Janet Yekel) held in the weeks leading up to the Demolition Derby on Aug. 17 garnered $4,200 for the organization, which provides emotional and financial support to local cancer patients and their families. This was the first year CAN Cancer and Yekel’s Repair have held the fundraiser, which offered participants the chance to drive in the derby. Tickets were sold for $10, and a live drawing for the winner was held on Aug. 11. Sharon Dringle of Idaho won the drawing and competed in the event with the specially adorned CAN Cancer car (complete with signatures of cancer survivors and “thrivers”). Dringle took second during the Powder-Puff Heat and let fellow contestant Hanna Strain finish for her in the Main Event. After taking second, Dringle and Strain donated their winnings ($1,700) back to CAN Cancer to bring the total funds raised to $4,200. Sponsors included Ed Moulton, Craig Yekel, Stuart Yekel, Yekel’s Repair, Point S Tire & Auto Service, NAPA Auto Parts, Dan Coiler Scrap, B&S Auto Wrecking, Ward’s Custom Fabrication, C&B Sanitary Services, and Harney District Hospital. Fundraiser organizers will be looking for another CAN Cancer derby car for next year. If you would like to donate, please contact Yekel’s Repair at 541-573-2704.
