Making the Healthy Choice

The “5-1-1-0 Raising Healthy Kids!” program presented two water bottle refilling stations and water bottles to the students of Hines Middle School on Monday, Jan. 28, thanks to obesity prevention grant funds from Dr. Stephen Archer, bariatric surgeon at Summit Medical Group Oregon – Bend Memorial Clinic. An additional two water stations have been installed at Slater Elementary, and were presented along with water bottles to all students at an assembly.

According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a child’s risk of becoming obese increases by 60 percent with each sugary beverage consumed daily.

5-1-1-0 encourages parents to help children choose water over sugar-sweetened drinks. 5-1-1-0 advocates:

• 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day;
• 1 hour or less of screen time per day;
• 1 hour or more of physical activity per day;
• 0 sugar-sweetened drinks per day.
