Hospital Volunteer


The most important responsibility of a volunteer at Harney District Hospital is providing companionship and a friendly face to hospital patients in a confidential and respectful manner. Volunteers may choose among a variety of specific jobs including:

Each of these positions may require different skills, but all skills may be learned on the job.

Admitting Clerk, Casual

  • Greet patients, accept payments, write receipts, answer patient questions or refer them to the proper account representative.
  • Admit patients, including those presenting through the Emergency Dept., obtain accurate and complete patient information and signatures.  Coordinate flow of outpatients to various departments
  • Receive payments, balance cash to daily receipts, make deposits, maintain cash drawer.
  • Operate switchboard, relay incoming and outgoing calls, page personnel.
  • Cooperate with hospital staff in achieving the common goal of providing quality customer service.
  • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.  These duties may include: accurately and timely performing insurance follow up, assisting receipts clerk in accurately processing and posting receipts, data entry of charges or other billing information, processing the hospital mail.
Hours/Days: Casual. Hours and days will include weekends, evenings, nights and holidays as staffing needs require.

$12.29-16.51 DOE


Knowledge of general office practices, computer/data entry procedures, operation of office equipment, use of telephone systems, arithmetic, spelling, English and grammar.  General knowledge of confidentiality concepts and requirements.  Ability to communicate effectively with the public, insurance companies, and staff both orally and in writing.  Equivalent to a high school education and six (6) months related experience, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.

Hospital Foundation Manager, Part Time


This position provides leadership for Foundation activities that align with the vision and mission of Harney County Health District.  Establishes annual and multi-year fundraising goals for capital campaigns, annual giving, special events, and building a robust endowment program. Works closely with the Foundation’s board of directors to build relationships, raise funds, and develop strategic positioning. Cultivates relationships and establishes long-term ties to the community and ensures effective stewardship of donations. Represents the foundation and the health district in the community.

Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred in marketing, communications, business management or related field.

Required Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with fundraising or sales, experience with project management or event coordination, exceptional interpersonal skills, strong writing and speaking skills and strong computer skills.

Preferred Experience: Three or more years of professional fundraising experience and a successful track record in cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Exceptional experience in maintaining a donor-centered approach to fundraising within the parameters of organizational priorities. Exceptional interpersonal skills, especially the ability to build relationships internally and externally. Exceptionally strong communication skills, including the ability to listen well. Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, sensitivity, and confidentiality in relation to donor/prospect relations, departmental planning, and project management.

RN for Infection Prevention, Employee Health Community-Patient Educator, and Direct Patient Care, Full Time


Research, develop and coordinate patient/family and community education. Promote health and safety to all employees by facilitating an Employee Health Program which includes disease detection, prevention, and treatment; following up employee illnesses and injuries; offering employee health screenings; and promoting a safe work environment. The main areas of focus include, but are not limited to: Infection Prevention, Employee Health, Community-Patient/Family Educator, and Direct patient care.

Hours/Days: Full time - 36-40 hour work week, (twelve hours of which are in Med/surg dept.) Requires 5 working days per week.

$30.45 – $46.48 (per ONA contract)


Oregon RN license required.  Basic knowledge of employee health and infection control standards.  Knowledge of medical charting terminology and procedures, standard nursing principles and practices.  Knowledge of record keeping practices and basic office functions.

Prefer small, Critical Access Hospital experience and a Bachelors RN.

Materials Management Clerk, Part Time


Review requests for medical equipment, furnishings, supplies and other items to assure that requisitions meet purchasing policies.  Compare prices, specifications, and delivery dates.  Prepare purchase orders, obtain approvals as required.  Receive and stock inventory items. Review stock items to ensure that stock levels are consistent with usage and rotate stock to avoid outdates. 

Process outgoing and incoming shipments.  Reconcile monthly shipping billings. Maintain invoices, receiving records, logs and paperwork.

Consult with departments to resolve discrepancies, obtain samples, returning defective items, determine quality, effectiveness and durability of purchases, or to assist them in preparing requisitions for special items.

Fill supply requisitions and deliver to requesting department.

Hours/Days: Part Time, shift times vary.

$12.02 - $16.15


Knowledge of shipping, receiving, and purchasing concepts and general computer usage for research, recordkeeping and purchasing. Equivalent to a high school education and at least six (6) months of general office experience, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.

Harney District Hospital

Harney District Hospital (HDH) has a history of pursuing leading edge projects.  Innovation at HDH ranges from installing a wood pellet heating system in the new facility (saving tens of thousands of dollars in heating costs) to developing physician coverage models for Emergency and Surgery.  With the new hospital facility and a staff skilled and growing, HDH is expanding to include an appropriate range of procedures and services which encourage patients to seek care at home. 

Currently, people make a 130 mile drive for various surgical services; then drive another 130 miles back home to Harney County.  This is not the best care we can give, nor is it the healthiest option for the patient. Anyone in the health care field is aware of the alarming possibility of readmission after surgery.

Permanent FT

General surgeon for rotating practice in CAH hospital.  Must be competent in general bread and butter procedures, upper/lower endoscopy, trauma call coverage and prefer C-Section back up.  Referral from 5 Family Medicine and 5 midlevel’s in hospital based clinic.  Experienced staff, First Assist, newer facility with two OR suites.  Employed position with full benefits, PERS retirement. Mid-level Provider, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

Salary: TBD base +incentive

Full Time

Conduct comprehensive physical assessments; establish diagnoses for common illnesses and conditions.
Manage acute and chronic conditions in patients.
Prescribe and manage medications. Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests. Order imaging procedures as needed.
Provide patient education and promote patient health and wellness.
Regularly consult with physicians on patient care issues and if deemed necessary, refer patients to as appropriate.
Be available to provide patient care for at least 50% of the time t the clinic operates.
Participate in the development and review of Rural Health Clinic policies, procedures and services and offer recommendations for revisions as part of the Annual Review Committee.

REQUIREMENTS:  Broad knowledge of health care, patient care principles and practices. Possession of a degree from accredited school for Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners. Must possess a current, unencumbered, Oregon license for NP or PA. Must be in good standing with the respective Oregon Licensing Board. Must have current Federal DEA license.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS:  Prefer at least 5 years experience in a family practice setting.  Experience with motivational interviewing techniques.
