Hospital Volunteer


The most important responsibility of a volunteer at Harney District Hospital is providing companionship and a friendly face to hospital patients in a confidential and respectful manner. Volunteers may choose among a variety of specific jobs including:

Each of these positions may require different skills, but all skills may be learned on the job.

Medical Assistant, Full Time


Prepare patients for examinations, retrieve and update patient records and, under the supervision of the medical provider, assist in care of the patient. Provide direct patient service by checking in patients, assisting patients in the exam room, recording vitals and updating medical histories and medication records.

Hours/Days: Full Time

$12.29 - $16.51/hour


Knowledge of medical office procedures and methods, including general knowledge of medications and drug classifications. General knowledge of English, grammar, spelling, mathematics, medical terminology and health computer application. Understanding of confidentiality concepts and requirements. Ability to communicate effectively with the healthcare professionals and public. Equivalent to a high school education.

CMA or EMT Certification or ability to achieve in a reasonable amount of time or a minimum of 3 years medical office experience providing direct patient care.

Nurse Manager


Plan, integrate, and supervise nursing personnel and assigned services. Monitor for compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations and rules.  Assess workflow, methods, communication, training and leadership within departments, and develop recommendations for the CNO.  Work with HR to post and fill vacant positions.  Share after-hours call with CNO to address urgent issues during nights or weekends.

Broad knowledge of nursing principles and practices, principles and practices of personnel and supervision, team-building methods and staff development techniques.  Knowledge of budgeting, nursing and medical regulations and guidelines, principles and practices of customer service, Medicare/Medicaid regulations and those of insurers and other regulatory bodies, effective management, and word processing, spreadsheet and database applications software. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of nursing and over three (3) years’ experience in management or leadership in a hospital setting, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.

Environmental Services Worker


Perform cleaning duties in the Housekeeping and Laundry Linen Services Departments to ensure sanitary, orderly, and attractive conditions in the hospital.  Receive daily cleaning assignments.  Follow cleaning schedules and procedures (daily, weekly, monthly) as outlined for the department. Perform various cleaning tasks at all hospital campus areas including surgical unit, such as dusting; mopping floors; emptying trash containers; wash walls, windows, screens, and blinds.  Clean bathrooms and replenish supplies as needed.  Operate electrical cleaning equipment in a safe manner, e.g. vacuum, carpet shampooer, etc.  Inspect areas for cleanliness and sanitary conditions and correct as necessary.  Report any observed repair needs.  Clean, sort, fold and dispense hospital linen.  Requisition necessary cleaning and toiletry supplies.  Stock cleaning supplies, linen, garbage bags, toiletry supplies, etc. in appropriate locations.  Move biological and hazardous waste to appropriate storage unit.

Hours/Days: Full time, shift times vary, weekends included



General knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and solutions used in housekeeping; and, safe usage, care and maintenance of cleaning equipment and supplies.  Equivalent to a high school education, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.  Previous work or volunteer experience performing institutional housekeeping tasks preferred.

Surgical Tech, Full Time


Assist with surgical procedures; handle all sterile instruments; participate in sponge/ instrument counts and the dressing of wounds.  Assist the surgeon as directed; aids the circulating nurses with duties related to the care of the patient while in the operating room.  Assist with endoscopic procedures.  Assist with the proper preparation and disposition of specimens.  Assist with adequate preparation of the operating room for surgery.  Participate in the decontamination and reprocessing of surgical instruments and endoscopic equipment.

Hours/Days: Full time

$16.77-$22.54, Certified +$2.00, 1st Assist. +$5.00


Two years experience as operating room technician in an acute care multi-disciplinary facility or Ambulatory Surgery Center within the past three years.  Combined training and experience that resulted in learning basic techniques required in performing operating room technician duties with emphasis in general and laparoscopic surgery.  Must have knowledge and demonstrate the principles of acceptable practices of surgical asepsis.  Must have knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology and the pathological processes.  Possess basic knowledge of operative procedures, ability to operate sterilizers and all equipment used in the operating room.  Candidate must participate in teaching.  High school diploma or equivalent.  Basic Life Support certification required.  Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.

Harney District Hospital

Harney District Hospital (HDH) has a history of pursuing leading edge projects.  Innovation at HDH ranges from installing a wood pellet heating system in the new facility (saving tens of thousands of dollars in heating costs) to developing physician coverage models for Emergency and Surgery.  With the new hospital facility and a staff skilled and growing, HDH is expanding to include an appropriate range of procedures and services which encourage patients to seek care at home. 

Currently, people make a 130 mile drive for various surgical services; then drive another 130 miles back home to Harney County.  This is not the best care we can give, nor is it the healthiest option for the patient. Anyone in the health care field is aware of the alarming possibility of readmission after surgery.

Emergency Room Physician Per Diem, One 48-hour weekday shift/week, up to 3 times/month

Critical access hospital Emergency Department weekday coverage. See urgent and emergent patients and follow inpatients as requested by primary physician. Level IV Trauma Center, General Surgeon on staff. Board-eligible/Board-certified Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine, Oregon license, ATLS/ACLS/PALS required. Experience in a rural environment preferred. Housing and meals provided.

Family Medicine Physician Full Time,
Obstetrics Optional

Clinic, inpatient and outpatient with rotating ER call once a week. OB optional.  CME, loan repayment, relocation expenses and early commit stipend while in residency.  Salaried position with full medical, retirement and vacation benefits.  Designated a Tier 3 Patient Centered Primary Care Home and Rural Health Clinic.
