The Harney Hospital Foundation was organized in 1980. Early supporters and principals included Larry Assmussen, Bill Cramer, Nancy Ebar, Lee Felder, Jim LaFollette, Arlie Oster, Bethanne Pulliam and the Ruel Teagues. It was an energetic and organized bunch of pioneers. The primary goal of the Foundation was raising funds to support the county's healthcare system. Fundraising activities included a Hospital Foundation Ball.
When the Hospital became a District Hospital in 1989, the Foundation was reorganized. Sam Caizza, Robin Cramer, Sandra Mallon, Dee McClarin, Katie Wendel and Tony Whitley were among those who got things going again.
Soon thereafter, the first endowment fund was established. Both local and out-of-town businesses and individuals were solicited to raise funds. Donors included Bend Memorial Clinic, Cramer & Mallon, Harney County Federal Credit Union, High Desert Medical Center, Oster Professional Group and Women's Medical Group in Bend. By 1992, the endowment fund stood at more than $60,000.
In the late 90's, the Foundation was headed up and run by Sherrie Modey and Sammie Masterson. Under their guidance, the foundation continued to grow financially. They both were crucial to the success of the fundraising Casino Night and Buckaroo Books. They presided over the donation of tens of thousands of dollars to the Hospital.
The current mission of the Foundation flows from the original purpose and carries on the goals set by our 1989 founding members.
Some of the Foundation's most visible contributions include x-ray equipment (1994), automatic hospital doors (1996), the new ambulance (2002) and a new OB birthing suite (2003). In addition, the Foundation supports scholarships for medical fields, the First Responder program and needed capital improvements. For years tracked, the Foundation has donated more than $90,000 to the Hospital!!
